The TalkSwitch Response Point of View
Microsoft appears to be backing off development of the Response Point phone system but TalkSwitch is clearly forging ahead. We're here because of all the great small business entrepreneurs and we're sticking with you through thick and thin, as we have for the past thirteen years.
I suspect that many players in the SMB telephony channel are watching the Microsoft Response Point situation closely. Why? Because we believe in the business opportunity and know it to be real. At TalkSwitch, we've been focused on SMB telephony since 1996, and since 2000 we've sold over 35,000 PBX and IP PBX phone systems to the under-50-employee market. It's 100% of what we do and who we are. I started the company because I believed the segment was so badly underserved that there was a remarkable opportunity there. SMB telephony is our stake in the ground. When Microsoft committed to the segment, it validated the opportunity even further, but more important for all of us, it created much greater industry awareness, which ultimately gets conveyed to customers. Awareness is, in my opinion, the greatest obstacle now to mass market adoption.
As I'm sure you're well aware, the SMB customer comes in many shapes and sizes, and all of them deserve to have the same professional phone system features and functionality that enterprise customers have taken for granted for years. Now, more than ever, this is possible.
There's no doubt about the magnitude of time, commitment, stamina, resources and technology required to be a successful phone system developer. It's not something any organization can enter into casually, and I expect Microsoft is giving this matter serious consideration.
In the meantime, we all need to strengthen our operations, secure our customers and keep our eyes on the ball. This market is worth it.

The TS-850i – Cordless Phone Freedom & So Much More
This is the best business phone I’ve ever used. Product Management provided me with an initial prototype for testing, and it had me at hello. Notwithstanding its technical capabilities (boasting all the features of an executive business phone and seamless integration with our TalkSwitch phone system), it delivers pure pleasure and efficiency.
It’s got great audio and display. I use the speakerphone all the time, and with cordless freedom I can place it anywhere in my office or take it to a meeting room. Also, being able to walk and talk is a big plus. For some reason, the conversations end up being more productive. And with 8 hours talk time and 240 hours standby, this phone is built for business.
It’s also versatile. The
TalkSwitch TS-850i works as both an IP and analog phone, so you connect the way you want – traditional or VoIP. TalkSwitch TS-850i handsets work as IP extensions or can optionally connect to a traditional phone line. You get the best of both worlds for teleworkers - connect to office and home phone lines from the same cordless handset. Plus, it supports up to 8 handsets per base. Installation is a snap and it’s auto-provisioned for TalkSwitch.
If your work style demands flexibility, freedom and performance, this is the phone for you.
The TS-850i requires a TalkSwitch VS or CA/CVA phone system running system software 6.11 or higher. TalkSwitch management software 6.11 is now available for
free download. With support for the TS-850i and improved diagnostic tools, 6.11 is the best TalkSwitch software yet.

Smartphone Infidelity – Crushing on the iPhone
Several of my associates at
TalkSwitch are looking ever so slick and happy, working efficiently with their new iPhones. I am a
Blackberry (AKA Crackberry) girl, and thought that nothing could woo me away from my commitment to and evangelism for their products. I’ve used several models over the past five years and they’ve all been excellent. But that
iPhone looks and feels smokin’ hot. They had me at the calculator. It also seamlessly integrated into our work environment, keeping its users well-connected within our communications infrastructure.
A
smartphone has proven to be my favorite business tool. Mine has virtually replaced my laptop when I travel, although I’m also crushing on those netbooks. Smartphone +
netbook = mobile utopia. And contrary to many who feel the smartphone causes stress and addiction, for me it brings comfort and success. Why? I’m in charge and never without critical information that allows me to do a better job, faster and my way. My smartphone provides performance, flexibility and freedom, much like our TalkSwitch phone systems do for small businesses everywhere.
My Blackberry is set as my TalkSwitch
remote extension and fully integrated with the business features TalkSwitch provides to make small businesses look good and sound big. If you aren’t already using a
phone system or a smartphone, do some research and you might find exactly the combination that’s right for you and your business.

It’s Your Business & You Can VoIP If You Want To
If you've been shopping for a phone system, you've probably heard a lot about
VoIP and how it can make telephone communication less expensive and more effective. If you have multiple locations or teleworkers, or if you spend a lot on long distance, VoIP might be the best choice for you. VoIP can save you money and improve your communication.
Connect multiple locations: Whether your other locations are around the corner or around the world, if you have VoIP-enabled
TalkSwitch systems in each location you can integrate them directly over the Internet. And that means that branch-to-branch calls don't cost a cent. Plus, you can do fancy stuff like seamlessly transferring calls to your Denver office over to your technical support team in, say, California or Mexico. You don't need special VoIP services - just broadband Internet access in both locations.
Connect Teleworkers: If you have teleworkers or do some work from your home office, it's nice to have an extension that's fully integrated with the office system. TalkSwitch
Connect Anywhere IP extensions work just like the ones at the office, which means you can do three-digit dialing, transferring, conferencing and so on. And you don't need special VoIP services, just broadband Internet access in both locations.
Connect to VoIP services: Plenty of service providers are eager to sign you up to their VoIP networks, and they can save you a lot of money on long distance calls. If you want to use one of their services, you need a VoIP-enabled TalkSwitch. See our list of approved service providers in the
United States and
Canada.
VoIP your own way: Get $100 off select VoIP systems and upgrades during the
TalkSwitch VoIPalicious sale. It’s a sweet deal.
TalkSwitch is a hybrid system, so you have the power to choose VoIP or traditional connections, or to use both. It’s all about flexibility, choice, savings and a seamless, professional experience for your callers.

Voicemail to e-mail. What’s all the fuss about?
Voicemail to e-mail is one of my favorite professional productivity features. Why?
1. Every call counts, so you want to make sure you don’t miss any. Have you ever accidentally deleted a message, written the number incorrectly or lost the sheet of paper you scribbled it down on, wondering if you should have become a Doctor writing illegible prescriptions? I have. With
voicemail to e-mail, I get a record in my inbox with the proper number available at a glance. It’s my insurance policy.
2. Quiet please! Have you ever set your phone to do not disturb while concentrating on a contract and forget that it’s there? I have. With voicemail to e-mail, the message stealthily pops up in the corner of my computer and I am politely prompted to get back on the phone and get some more business.
3. You have 35 saved messages. Have you ever hoarded messages to get back to at a later date only to find that you spend too much time pounding through them to get to the one that matters most? I have. With voicemail to e-mail, I can just glance at the nice file folder I’ve set up in my Outlook and save a whack of time getting what I need when I need it.
4. Have you ever just wanted to sit comfortably on your couch sipping a hot coffee while getting caught up on voicemail and e-mail? I have. Voicemail to e-mail allows me to do this with one device – my laptop.
5. It’s a steal of a deal. Free. Yes. Free with
TalkSwitch!
Give voicemail to email a try, and don’t forget to check out all the other
great features that come with the most owner-friendly™ phone system designed exclusively for small business.

Pick Me!
Outstanding customer service is what will separate the winners and losers in 2009. This is the year relationships will reign. It’s time to stop and evaluate why customers should do business with your firm instead of your competitors.
Now more than ever, buyers are looking harder and thinking longer, not only about the need for any product or service, but the confidence that they’re dealing with a solid and professional organization. When resources are scarce or
times are tough, there is a magnifying glass applied to vendor choice. What tilts the scale in your favor?
The answer, simply put, is feeling good. Feeling good about what they’re getting, feeling good about how much they’re paying and feeling good about the product performance, customer care, warranties and continued interaction with your business. It’s about great customer experience at every level. It’s about having them enjoy — yes enjoy — doing business with your firm above all others.
It starts the first time they call you. Make every call count. Make sure your phone system delivers the performance you need to get the business you deserve.

Why I Love My Remote Extension
My cell phone is set as a remote extension. The big benefits are seamless calls from customers and co-workers any time, and I only provide one number to my contacts. This is a great bonus for my long distance callers, as they can use my toll-free number and reach me wherever I may be at no extra cost. You can also get creative if your cell phone plan lets you select certain numbers for no-charge minutes. If you set your office number as one of your selected ‘free’ numbers then all the calls that reach you on your cell phone via your remote extension are at no charge. You gotta love that!

Plus, it's so easy to sell. Once you start talking features, TalkSwitch practically sells itself.
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
For most small and medium-sized businesses in the market for a phone system solution, TalkSwitch is a no-brainer. It does everything a business could want and more, at a fraction of the cost of other systems. Not only does it help to manage calls effectively, it also provides voicemail, hold music and a host of other features that businesses with other systems either find themselves paying extra for, or going without. Best of all, it's easy to set up and configure, so they don't experience lots of down time or need to spend a fortune on installation. The bottom line is, using TalkSwitch saves our clients time and money, and in the end you can't argue with that.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
They love it! The features, the phones, the ease of use, cost - everything. And they give TalkSwitch the highest compliment of all - they tell their friends and colleagues about it.

TalkSwitch vs. Packet8, Aptela and Vocalocity
One way to get phone system functionality in your small business is a hosted VoIP phone system. According to the hosted VoIP providers, a hosted phone system has "low start-up costs and monthly fees...implementation is cheaper, quicker and easier." Sounds good right? Trust me - don't rush off to sign up just yet.
Features
Having the right feature-set for your business needs is absolutely crucial. Both TalkSwitch and the hosted VoIP services have a modern feature-set - auto attendants, follow-me routing, voicemail, voicemail to e-mail, forwarding, external IP phones, etc. From a perspective of feature-set, most small businesses will find their needs met by any of these options.
Pricing
For the comparison against TalkSwitch, I've chosen three hosted VoIP service providers - Aptela, Packet8, and Vocalocity. Each system is configured with 12 extensions and a standard set of phone system features.
So my favorite part - the dollars and cents. Below are the upfront costs and total cost of ownership at 1, 2, and 5 years for each package.
|
TalkSwitch w/ Unlimited VoIP |
Aptela Business VoIP 500 Minutes |
Packet8 Unlimited Extension Plus |
Vocalocity Unlimited Extension |
| Up Front |
$3,243.00 |
$2,148.00 |
$479.88 |
$1,548.00 |
| 1 year TCO |
$5,763.00 |
$5,676.00 |
$9,118.44 |
$7,306.56 |
| 2 year TCO |
$8,283.00 |
$9,204.00 |
$17,757.00 |
$13,065.12 |
| 5 year TCO |
$15,843.00 |
$19,788.00 |
$43,672.68 |
$30,340.80 |
Understandably, you may be wondering why hosted VoIP is actually far more expensive than buying a phone system and service. Here's what's in each package:
TalkSwitch VoIP
Here I used a TalkSwitch 248vs phone system and 12 9133i IP phones. For service I picked 6 unlimited long distance VoIP at $35/line each month and no line activation charges. It's worth noting if your office has lighter phone use you could easily cut a few lines out - cutting two lines further reduces the $840 each year.
Aptela Business VoIP 500 Minutes
For Aptela I quoted their metered package - each extension is $24.50/month and includes 500 minutes of outbound local and long distance calls. It's worth putting 500 minutes in perspective - that's about 22 minutes each workday - after that any outbound call is $.029/minute. For equipment and set-up, they charge $20/extension for activation and $159 for each Polycom IP330 phone. The cost above assumes no per minute overages, yet is still more expensive than TalkSwitch.
Packet8 Unlimited Extension Plus
The Packet8 Unlimited Extension Plus package is an unlimited long distance package with no upfront equipment costs - your only upfront cost is activation, making it over $1,000 less initially than the next least expensive option. Per extension activation is $39.99 and they include an Aastra 6753i phone. But this package has the highest monthyl cost at $59.99/extension - causing the total cost of ownership to soar far beyond any other package. Of course, Packet8's plus plan also has an extended warranty, but you'd be hard pressed to break enough phones to make up the difference.
Vocalocity Unlimited Extension
The Vocalocity Unlimited Extension plan has unlimited calling like Packet8, but the phones are purchased up front. Their least expensive phone is the Linksys SPA 941 at $129. Monthly service is $39.99/extension each month.
Why is hosted VoIP more expensive?
A few reasons - each month, you're paying per extension rather than per simultaneous call (line) and instead of buying inexpensive equipment you pay more monthly for their equipment as a service. Over 5 years, the monthly cost of the TalkSwitch and unlimited VoIP lines is just $22 per extension - half to a third of the cost of hosted VoIP.
Installation
There is one honest statement hosted VoIP providers make about their service - quick set up. The phones are generally preconfigured - just plug them in and dial. A TalkSwitch wtih VoIP service is honestly not as easy, but TalkSwitch can be easier to set up than hosted VoIP - just call your local TalkSwitch Authorized Partner. Given that TalkSwitch will save you nearly $15,000 over Vocalocity in the next 5 years - paying a professional $1,000 to do the set up is a bargain and a time-saver.
Maintenance and Support
Hosted VoIP has an easy point-and-click interface to make changes - as does TalkSwitch. Hosted VoIP services have free phone support - as does TalkSwitch. Certainly, a phone system can fail, but so can hosted services - they have equipment too. But to protect your phone system investment, the $300 4-year extended warranty is a great idea.
If you're really concerned about equipment, you could buy a second TalkSwitch, 12 spare phones, and pay $150/month for an on-call service technician and you'd still save thousands picking TalkSwitch over Vocalocity.
Bottom line - TalkSwitch is every bit as easy to maintain as a hosted service. Given the free phone support and local on-site support from your TalkSwitch Authorized Partner you will get the support you need.
Quality
Certainly price alone shouldn't make your decision - quality is a key factor. So I went looking for user reviews. VoIPReview.org has a great user review section with feedback on all of these hosted VoIP providers. Out of 5 stars, all three hosted VoIP providers currently score a 3.
Hosted VoIP is trivial to set up, but getting reliable voice quality isn't always so easy. Read the reviews and there are consistent complaints about call quality, support, and reliability. In my experience helping out purchasers of hosted VoIP, even when everything is right on your network, they still don't always work well.
On the other hand, TalkSwitch was awarded the best small business VoIP product for 2008 by the readers of Small Business Computing Magazine. In my experience as a user and installer of TalkSwitch products, they are absolutely dependable.
Conclusion
Hosted VoIP has a terrific marketing message - but the reality just doesn't add up. TalkSwitch delivers the features small businesses need, terrific service, unmatched quality, and a significantly lower total cost of ownership.

Reseller Feature: TruConnections
1. Where are you located?
Our main office is located in Southern New Hampshire in a town called Windham.
2. Where did you first hear about us?
We visited the TalkSwitch booth in the Fall Voice on the Net (VON) show held in Boston, Massachusetts in September 2005. The TalkSwitch system was a hit at the show.
3. What attracted you to TalkSwitch?
The company founders have worked at large international telecommunications companies. The features of the TalkSwitch system were outstanding in Release 2.41 and they are now exceptional with the most current release. The system is a perfect blend of the converged voice and data communications. When TruConnections has pre-sales or post-sales questions, TalkSwitch is there with the answers. The sales and support teams at TalkSwitch are professional, friendly and they know the system. As an authorized TalkSwitch reseller, we appreciate the quick responses to our questions. The rapid and accurate answers keep our sales proposal costs and support costs down, which allows us to lower the cost to the customer and improve our margins. The ability to remotely manage TalkSwitch systems allows TruConnections to have a larger coverage area for our TalkSwitch service. The ability to quickly make changes is an appreciated benefit for our TalkSwitch customers.
Based on our TalkSwitch experience, we have found the TalkSwitch system, phones, software and firmware to be very robust and very reliable. Because TruConnections provides business technical services, a new TalkSwitch sale often leads to increased long term sales as the new account takes advantage of our other services (such as Windows server support, networking, application support, etc.).
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
Each of our TalkSwitch customers use the Voicemail and Auto Attendant features. TalkSwitch sites that need to stay in touch with their customers after hours (i.e. lawyers, doctors, dentists, CPAs, etc.) use remote extensions to have TalkSwitch call their home office or cell phone. The ability of TalkSwitch to support multiple businesses in one box is a great feature for our customers who run multiple businesses (i.e. a CPA + dog breeding + Food for Pets stores). The TalkSwitch infrastructure is put in place and can professionally manage all phone communications for disparate businesses without the expense of a dedicated system for each business. Our TalkSwitch customers take advantage of our service to create a Message-on-Hold with music. This TalkSwitch capability allows customers to customize and personalize their TalkSwitch phone system to highlight current sales promotions or benefits. The TalkSwitch voicemail to e-mail feature is widely used by TruConnections sites – the ability to get your voice messages on a Blackberry, smart PDA or a laptop when out of the office helps our TalkSwitch users stay in touch with their customers.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
Each of TruConnections TalkSwitch sites really enjoys the benefits of their TalkSwitch phone system. Our new TalkSwitch accounts have done a competitive analysis on business phone systems - they have selected TalkSwitch for its features, outstanding quality with the price/performance they are looking for in a business phone system. Our TalkSwitch customers like the enhanced and new features that are part of every TalkSwitch software release.

Reseller Feature: SimpleComm Solutions
1. Where are you located?
We are located in Chicago, Illinois.
2. How/where did you first hear about TalkSwitch?
We were using the Linksys and Cisco Call Manager solutions, and they simply weren’t working for us. So, we looked for a solution that was designed for our small business clientele and found TalkSwitch.
3. What attracted you to TalkSwitch?
We were attracted to TalkSwitch because of its low cost and flexibility. It’s a very attractive phone system because it offers analog and IP, as well as a host of other capabilities like remote extensions and external IP extensions. It gives small businesses some comfort knowing they can try VoIP for the first time without switching over to it completely, or losing the use of their analog lines.
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
TalkSwitch is an affordable solution for smaller offices, and it’s easy to configure. This is a major concern for many of our smaller clients. They want an inexpensive solution that can be easily managed, and TalkSwitch fits that profile.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
Here’s some feedback we received about TalkSwitch from one of our customers, Breakaway Technologies: “We’d replaced our 10-year-old phone system with a system from a well-known telecommunications manufacturer, and within one week realized it was a mess—the system didn't work, and our business was suffering. SimpleComm suggested TalkSwitch as an option. Within a day, the features and simplicity of using and managing the system convinced me. I wish we had installed the TalkSwitch system from day one!”

How TalkSwitch Stacks Up: TalkSwitch vs. Packet8
Kevin Selkowitz of Selkowitz Technology recently compared the Packet8 hosted PBX solution against TalkSwitch.
“…At CNET, the user reviews for Packet8 currently average 4.7/10 - a “mediocre” score. It doesn’t surprise me one bit, I know a Seattle firm that have had nothing but problems with Packet8. I couldn’t find a CNET review of TalkSwitch, but the readers of Small Business Magazine voted it “Best VoIP System for Small Business.” Not only can you get local professional installation and support for Talkswitch, but the manufacturer offers free phone support for life...”

Reseller Feature: CLM Computer Services
1. Where are you located?
We are based in Ellington, CT, which is closed to Hartford. We provide computer and telecom support services to businesses and homes in the surrounding area as well as remote support for clients in other states.
2. How/where did you first hear about TalkSwitch?
We first learned of TalkSwitch about 5 years ago when we were looking for a phone system for an office that we were (and still are) doing technical support for.
3. What attracted you to TalkSwitch?
Low cost and simple setup. Having been the phone administrator for several large companies with phone switches that cost over $100,000, it was refreshing to program a system with an easy-to-navigate interface and the same type of features that the larger systems have.
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
Again, the low cost of equipment and the abundance of available features. Since my first TalkSwitch customer was a non-profit, cost was a big factor in deciding on a phone system. TalkSwitch was the perfect fit for their office with every feature that they were looking for, and the perfect price.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
My customers love their TalkSwitch systems. They always tell me about how much time they save and how it helps them to sound more professional to their callers and customers.

Reseller Feature: eNable Business Solutions
1. Where are you located?
Cumming, Georgia (a northern suburb of Atlanta)
2. How/where did you first hear about TalkSwitch?
I was looking for a new phone system on behalf of one of my customers. In the process, I found TalkSwitch via a web search.
3. What attracted you to TalkSwitch?
Low price and ease of use. My typical customer is a small organization without a great deal of money to spend, and they want something that will allow them to be self-sufficient. One of TalkSwitch's competitors proudly advertises that their product is not customer-installable. I would not sell a product to a customer that was too difficult for them to install themselves.
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
As I mentioned, it is affordable, easy to use and feature-rich at the same time. One particular feature that was attractive to my customers was the ability to have DID service via a VoIP line. My first customer only had 4 employees, but wanted DID for each user. To achieve this with a traditional PBX would require a T-1 and expensive hardware, but not with TalkSwitch.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
They are impressed by how comprehensive the solution is for the price. One customer spent $15,000 a few years ago on his last PC-based system with similar capabilities. With TalkSwitch, he spent less than $2,000. My customers are also excited about using services like Business Office from NexVortex, which allows for unlimited simultaneous inbound calls. This service, when combined with TalkSwitch will prevent their customers from ever getting a busy signal.

Swing into Summer Contest Winners Share Insights
In our Swing into Summer Contest, we asked customers how TalkSwitch helped them stay connected whether on the road, in a hotel room, or on the golf course. Below are the answers from two of the winners:
"To offer support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year has never been so important. We use the remote IP extensions for just that! TalkSwitch gives us the flexibility to run our business, at the office or on the road. TalkSwitch is a perfect match with soft phones for my staff who use laptops, allowing them to connect anytime, anywhere."
- Patrick Hanf, Trail Blazer Campaign Services, Inc.
Trail Blazer Campaign Services makes software that manages the database needs of political campaigns, PACs
and non-profit organizations. Trail Blazer began its operations in 2002. Over the years it has helped campaigns and non-profits to better manage and stay connected with their donor bases. Trail Blazer provides unparalleled support for its product 24/7. Visit www.trailblz.com for more information.
"We are a small business and we get anywhere between 50 and 70 calls per day. When we answer the phone, we spend anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes per call with our customers. We wanted to hire someone to answer the phones, but this person couldn't commute to our office on a daily basis. So, we decided to buy an IP phone and upgrade our TalkSwitch to allow an external extension to be hooked up. It's been working perfectly, and it is totally seamless to our customers. We are very happy with TalkSwitch!"

Reseller Feature: InfinIT Services
1. Where are you located?
Ste-Thérèse, Québec (North shore of Montréal).
2. How/where did you first hear about TalkSwitch?
I heard about TalkSwitch before I left Imeco Telecom (TalkSwitch distributor) where I worked as major account representative for the province of Québec.
3. What attracted you to TalkSwitch?
I have worked for manufacturer reps, distributors and manufacturers for several years and have seen many VoIP telephone systems that promised a lot, but delivered very little. If it did deliver, it was done in a poor manner. TalkSwitch is the first VoIP (hybrid) solution I have seen that not only promises great features, but delivers on those promises. It is all done in a very elegant way and is priced very well. I also like the fact that TalkSwitch is a Canadian company that treats the small guy like a large account, pre/post sales and technical support is second to none.
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
There is nothing else in the market that fits the targeted space with the features TalkSwitch offers and at a price that makes sense. Clients only had a choice of 2-line phones at $200, or a $7,000 beast that does not fit the budget; with Talkswitch they get everything they need (and more) for the right price. Another major feature is French language support; many of my customers are French and it is great to be able to tell them TalkSwitch is 100% bilingual.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
Many customers are pleased with the ease of use and the familiarity of controls for many features. Several of my clients love the cell phone as remote extension feature; being able to transfer calls back to the office from their cell phone is fantastic.

Reseller Feature: centrexIT
1. Where are you located?
We are located in San Diego, California.
2. How/where did you first hear about TalkSwitch?
We first heard about TalkSwitch from an Avaya reseller in Florida.
3. What attracted you to TalkSwitch?
We currently resell, support and install Inter-Tel and ShoreTel phone systems. TalkSwitch was so attractive because it comes built-in with most of the same features that Inter-Tel and ShoreTel systems have, but at a fraction of the cost. I knew that we had to review the TalkSwitch product right away. Now that we are a TalkSwitch reseller, it's turned into a win-win for my company and our clients. We are able to resell and support another quality product (TalkSwitch), and our clients add lots of advanced features to their phone system without increasing their budget.
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
Unlike the other phone systems that we sell, TalkSwitch was designed for small companies, and can be scaled up for larger companies. We used to take a phone system that is designed for a large company, and scale it down for smaller companies. The problem with that is that they are still paying more for the core of the larger system. With TalkSwitch, we are able to offer the same large system features, as well as the benefits of VoIP to small business who couldn't otherwise afford them.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
Nothing except for positive feedback. After all of our installs, we provide a free training session for the users, which usually answers most of their questions. The users are typically upgrading from some sort of Avaya or NEC system that only has basic voicemail. At first, some users are very excited by all of the new features (voicemail to e-mail, Attendant Console software, call forwarding and bridging, etc) and some users don't think that they will ever use them. Within a few months, all of the users are happily using the new features, and can't remember how their business ever functioned without them. The best way for us to close a new TalkSwitch deal is to a) give them an on-site, in-person demo of the system and b) have them talk to one of our many satisfied TalkSwitch clients.

Facebook Group Member Offers Up Tips and Tricks
Congratulations to Michael Breines of Accessory Genie for winning our Facebook Discussion Board Contest. Accessory Genie sells batteries, laptop bags, chargers, power adapters, and iPod and mp3 player accessories for up to 30 to 40 per cent less. Last month, Michael's intuitive tips and tricks won him a copy of our Attendant Console software program. The software gives you the power to see and control your calls right on your PC.
Here are Michael's tips and tricks for using TalkSwitch:
Issue: We have several voicemail boxes configured to have announcement only. Customers hear an announcement and can dial "0" to speak with someone or hang up. There were not enough general voicemail boxes to support our numerous announcements.
Solution: We decided to utilize extensions to add announcements. We created a remote extension with a bogus phone number. We uploaded the announcement to the voicemail box for that remote extension. Since the remote extension only appears in the auto attendant and isn't in any call cascades, it works like any other general mailbox.
Issue: We were unable to keep callers on hold if no one answered their call. The auto attendant transfers a caller to a ring group called "support." Our call cascade rules say that if there is no answer in 9 rings, keep ringing. In the TalkSwitch rules, if no one picks up after 9 rings, regardless of the keep ringing option, the callers gets dropped. We needed to find a way to have our callers remain on hold if there was no answer.
Solution: We amended the call cascade to say, "After 9 rings, go to an auto attendant." We named that attendant "no answer." In that auto attendant, the caller has the choice to dial 2 and leave a message or continue holding for support. If no option is selected, the caller is sent back to the support ring group. In the office, we hear a ring every minute or so to indicate someone is holding for support and the caller remains on hold. It has proven to be a nice workaround to queue callers while agents are technically available but not able to pick up the ringing phone. Now they're able to finish working on e-mail and then grab the caller (without turning on and off the DND option throughout the day).
Check out Accessory Genie for your electronic accessories, and stay tuned for more contests on our Facebook group page.

Reseller Feature: Selkowitz Technology
1. Where are you located?
Bellevue, Washington (a Seattle suburb, also in the backyard of a certain Redmond technology company with their own phone system).
2. How/where did you first hear about TalkSwitch?
I first read about TalkSwitch about three years ago, when I started looking at phone systems options for my company. It took me at least a year to finally circle back around and purchase one. I thought hosted VoIP and computer-based telephony was the future and would be less expensive. What I found was hosted VoIP didn't work reliably and cost quite a lot. Computed-based telephony was difficult to install and manage - and had a higher cost of entry. So I circled back and picked up a 244vs for my company, loved it, then starting selling them to my customers.
3. What attracted you to TalkSwitch?
The feature set and total cost of ownership were very compelling. It has the best aspects of modern telecommunications systems (voicemail to e-mail, easy management interface, IP extensions, etc) while keeping the lowest TCO of any solution I reviewed.
4. What makes TalkSwitch an attractive product for your customers?
Value is something customers really appreciate. When a customer can save thousands and still get what they need from a well established and respected product, they really appreciate it. Also external IP extensions are becoming increasingly popular with high gas prices as it makes telecommuting practical for even small businesses.
5. What kind of feedback have you received from your customers about TalkSwitch?
What surprises anyone who's dealt with phone systems over the years is how easy the system is to manage. TalkSwitch's point and click interface is a far cry from the old days of punching numbers into the admin phone usually tucked away in a closet. Customers feel empowered by knowing how to handle small things themselves so we don't need to get involved for every change.

Rich Tehrani interviews Jan Scheeren
TMC is the top destination for news and analysis about the telecommunications and VoIP industry. Recently, TalkSwitch CEO Jan Scheeren sat down with TMC President and Group Editor-in-Chief Rich Tehrani to talk about the state of the small business communications industry, and where it’s heading.
On his blog, Tehrani described the discussion this way:
“Right now the small business market is the shining star in communications -- plenty of growth is predicted in this space and small businesses for the most part are behind the tech curve -- meaning they need to catch up. For over a decade, TalkSwitch has been serving this space with innovate, small PBXs designed to be easy to install and support.
Jan Scheeren the President & CEO of the company has been to TMC headquarters frequently to tell us about new products and upgrades. Scheeren knows the small business communications market better than most and on this podcast I was able to pick his brain on the SMB communications space and learn a great deal about his thoughts, the competitive situation, etc.
It is definitely worth a listen.”

Where is SMB Telecom Heading in 2008
2007 was an interesting year for telephony in the SMB space. We saw the ongoing marriage of Voice over IP services with customer premises equipment, which I attribute to reliability and quality having finally passed a tipping point. Small Business owners are always looking to reduce costs, and are often willing to take risks on new technology faster than their larger brethren. We all know that VoIP still isn’t a completely mature technology, but the ROI is so compelling that it is hard to resist deploying it in some capacity.
The tipping point is best represented by one solution – the hybrid.
Hybrid analog/VoIP PBXs are in demand. Why? Because not everyone is ready to give up their connections to the traditional telephone system. For some businesses, VoIP doesn’t offer a significant enough cost saving to make it worth the risk to completely switch. Others see it as complex and don’t feel confident in their ability to use this new technology. A hybrid solution lets those businesses experiment with VoIP, while keeping a traditional phone network safety net.
VoIP is about more than just transporting voice. We’re seeing the natural evolution that involves the integration of voice with applications. Social networking, conference collaboration, presence and routing applications, voice networking while gaming and click-to-dial from a web page are all examples of applications that make effective use of VoIP.
As we move further into 2008, I, and many others, expect analog trunking will continue to decline. Most of this can be attributed to the incumbent phone companies not offering any new “bang for your buck” features in their existing service packages. New competitors are entering the market every day with very competitive long distance and local service packages that come with all the necessary features included. Eventually, the incumbent providers are going to reach a point where they have to drop prices in order to compete and survive. When that happens, it will be interesting to see how that ripples across the industry. Will it lead to the demise of some of the newer VoIP service providers, or will it simply put the two technologies on a level playing field when it comes to price? I expect the answer to that question to reveal itself as this year rolls on.
I believe we’ll see a continued evolution as 2008 rolls along, one that will see both traditional and VoIP service providers strive to meet the changing demands of the market. I also believe that it is the hybrid systems, especially those that are designed to be owner-friendly enough that a small business-person can set up and maintain them, that are best suited to take advantage of this evolution. They provide maximum flexibility, and give businesses the ability to take advantage of all the benefits inherent in each technology.

TalkSwitch and Junior Achievement
Did you know that 8 out of 10 high school students say they are taught little or nothing in school about how business actually works? Yet more than 30% of those same students expressed interest in starting their own business once they graduate? (Source: www.jaeo.org)
TalkSwitch takes that entrepreneurial spirit seriously, and for the past few years members of the TalkSwitch team have been helping fill that knowledge gap by lending their time and energy to a local organization called Junior Achievement, a program that helps students achieve their full potential by gaining leadership, business and workforce readiness skills.
Involved in many different activities with the organization, TalkSwitch regularly sends members of its executive team to speak to diverse groups of students, and has provided sponsorship support for the organization’s annual awards gala. This year, a group of students mentored by TalkSwitch Channel Marketing Manager Valérie Albert took part in the Junior Achievement Company Program. As part of the program, students create a company and then develop, market and sell a product of their own design. At the recent awards gala, Valérie’s group took home the awards for Best Company, Best Product, Top Director and Entrepreneur of the Year.
Beyond the volunteer work, Junior Achievement is a happy TalkSwitch customer, relying on the TalkSwitch system installed in its Eastern Ontario office to provide it with the professional call handling capabilities it needs.
TalkSwitch is extremely proud of its association with Junior Achievement, and extends its congratulations, and thanks, to all the participants, volunteers and organizers that help make it such an important incubator for the business leaders of tomorrow.

What Should You Look For In A New Phone System?
For small businesses looking to purchase a new phone system, the sheer volume of information out there can be overwhelming. Frankly, it can be tough to even know where to start. Do you need VoIP, what kind of phones do you want to use, and who’s going to install and maintain it, are the questions that can leave small business owners scratching their heads. But it doesn’t have to be so difficult! If you know the right questions to ask prospective vendors, it can make the decision-making process a much easier and more enjoyable one. That’s why we’ve created this handy downloadable checklist of issues to take into consideration when looking for that perfect system. If a vendor can’t - or won’t - give you a straight answer to these questions, stay away!
You can download the checklist by clicking here.

What About Softphones?
In the last few years, softphones – essentially virtual telephones that reside on your PC - have become very popular with the road warrior set. Using a softphone means those workers don’t need to pack extra equipment when they travel, and because they work over the Internet, it can help save a lot of money on the long distance charges that traveling employees often incur.
There are cons of course. In order to receive calls your PC needs to be powered on, and in the event of a system crash your softphone won’t function. There is also the issue of network traffic that can degrade call quality. For those, and other reasons, a physical phone handset is still the best option in an office setting. If you do a lot of traveling or remote working though, a softphone is a nice option.
We get a lot of questions from customers asking about which softphone they should use with their TalkSwitch system, and we’re always happy to point them in the direction of the Counterpath Eyebeam v1.5. It’s an easy to use product that integrates nicely with the TalkSwitch feature set.
You can find more information on the Counterpath Eyebeam by visiting the website at: http://www.counterpath.com/eyebeam-overview.html

Analog or IP Phones - How Do You Decide?

You bought a phone system to help improve the way you communicate. Now you have to decide what devices you want to plug into it. You’ve got lots of choices, but how do you decide if a standard analog handset or a new IP model is the best fit for you and your business? And what’s the difference between the two?
Analog phones tend to be less expensive than IP phones and are true plug and play devices. Everybody has used an analog phone; in fact you’ve probably got one hanging on the wall in your kitchen at home. There’s nothing complicated about them, and if all you need is a dial tone and a way to make and receive calls you’ve got it - even in a power outage. But there’s no intelligence built into the phone, so that’s really all you’ll ever be able to do with it. And that’s more than enough for many businesses.
On the other hand, an IP phone gives you some additional capabilities beyond just simple calling. You still make and receive calls the same way, but because an IP phone has its own Internet address, you can plug that phone into any LAN connection and instantly be accessible to anyone calling your regular phone number or extension. A real benefit if you do a lot of business traveling or if you like to be able to telecommute. An IP phone will also allow you to take advantage of things like line appearance and other applications.
The most important thing is that whether you use an analog or an IP phone, you’ll be able to speak to customers and clients all over the world. It’s what you need beyond that basic function that will determine which type of handset is the best fit for you.
